Silvina Szelepski arrived in New York on December 19, 2001. The date may not mean much to most Americans, but for Silvina, it was nearly the end of her world. In Buenos Aires, where she was born, protests against government handling of Argentina’s economic crisis - bank accounts frozen, currency made almost worthless - hit a violent peak. Twenty-seven demonstrators were shot dead in two days. Glued to the images on TV, she wondered if she could ever go home again. (more…)
